Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives Steps Up In Sustainability
Grand Park Kohdhipparu Maldives has stepped up their game in sustainability with the opening of their on-site water bottling facility. Providing drinking water to be bottled in eco-friendly glass bottles for the guests and staff at the resort.
The resort, as most of the resorts in the Maldives, features a desalination plant to produce fresh water to be used in the resorts’ operations. Earlier the resort used to provide purchased bottled water in plastic bottles.
With the environmental awareness and direct danger of climate change to the Maldives, mainly the marine pollution by plastic waste, resorts in the Maldives have been taking action to deliver eco-friendly and sustainable tourism. Empty plastic bottles, straws and other plastic waste is the main source of sea pollution globally.
Throughout the years, many resorts have taken action to minimize the use of single-use plastic in their resorts. As part of its sustainability management plan under the Green Globe Standards for Responsible Tourism, Grand Park Kodhipparu has a target to significantly minimize the use of single-use plastics.
The new bottling facility produces filtered drinking water in reusable glass bottles. This has resulted in a reduction of over 15,000 plastic bottles a month from the resort’s operations.
Plastic drinking water bottles were previously the biggest source of single-use plastic on our island, so the use of refillable glass bottles has huge benefits in terms of reducing the waste from our operations that needs to be dealt with off island. We also hope this will set a positive example for people that there are alternatives to many single-use plastics and other packagingPeter Pringle, Resident Marine Biologist at Grand Park Kodhipparu
The new drinking water production system established by Grand Park Kodhipparu runs on a separate Reverse Osmosis desalinated water supply, with several subsequent filtration steps (ultraviolet sterilization, as well as carbon and mineral ball filter cartridges) before being delivered to a variety of dispensing units, including the bottling facility.
Each of the staff at the resort now has a stainless steel drinking water containers which can be refilled easily from dispensers around the resorts. Meanwhile, in the guest rooms and other facilities in the resort, water is delivered in glass bottles.
