Fairmont Maldives relaunches Jason DeCaires Taylor’s “The Coralarium” with a series of new sculptures

Jason Decaires Taylor’s famed underwater art installation gets relaunched at Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fenfushi resort. The British environmentalist and eco-artist’s work was first unveiled in July 2018 as the very first and only coral regeneration project of it’s kind in the Maldives. Although, it was closed shortly after waves of pressure regarding the sculpture the depicted humans form- which were later pulled to surface.
The Coralarium by Taylor, sits in the largest resort lagoon in the Maldives- a lagoon that features vast varieties of marine life. Guests can explore the sculptures and the marine life that has found a new home accompanied by a resident marine biologist or take part in an evening snorkelling tours. Sightings of manta rays, turtles and even bottlenose dolphins and over 250 species of tropical fishes can be expected.
A coral pathway leads guests to the Coralarium for the 200 metre infinity pool – the longest in the Maldives – that stretches from end to end of the island. Diving adventures and snorkeling sessions with the marine biologist showcase Fairmont Maldives’ best diving spots, right at the five-mile-long house reef, home to many manta ray cleaning stations. Guests can also create their own masterpiece in the on-site art studio- with the island atmosphere giving the necessary inspiration.
The new abstract sculptures are inspired by the natural beauty of the coral reef, imitating the ethereal formation of coral colonies. The semi-submerged Coralarium aims to raise awareness of the thretaned eco system and the effect of climate change on marine life. Taylor’s work is now a part of the local eco system, created with non-toxic and eco-friendly materials. As soon as the structure was completed in 2018, marine life boasted into a new home. Hard corals, sponges and thousands of schooling fish now live within its walls.

The Luxury resort is an ideal tropical haven offering leisure and luxury at its best. Just a seaplane ride away, Sirru Fenfushi offers 112 luxury Villas- each with a private pool.
